Thanks for the good info. You spotted the rust on mine when I posted a pic some time ago. I took your advice and removed the loose stuff before painting with vht paint, but one muffler has 3 small holes along it's seam already. Since the crossover pipe is also well rusted, I'm reluctant to take it apart in case I lose too much for me to reconnect it. I've filled the holes with exhaust paste in a trial run for getting it through it's forthcoming MOT.  I think I'll have a professional have a look at it.

The crossover pipe is pretty thick walled, much thicker than the muffler skins. The rust would have to be pretty bad.
Luckly my mufflers didn't rust trough, albeit some of those rusted spots are pretty thin!
