Hi,

Good idea! I've paid attention to where my bum hurts when on the saddle for longish periods, and it seems to me, the main problem is the convex shape and pressure under my thighs.

I have actually bought a second stock seat to experiment with. I wonder if others have done this? So far all I've done is remove the cover and pull the foam off the base to examine what's there.

I'm thinking to re-shape the foam by scalloping/dishing out the foam in the rider's and pillion's bum positions so that the shape is concave rather than convex. I think, looking at the pics of the Corbin and reading about seat mods on the Sargent seat site: http://www.sargentcycle.com/csroadcom.htm that dishing the foam in both positions should help considerably. However, looking at the plastic base, there are large knobs under the rider's and pillion's thigh positions that I think wouldn't help either. I'm also thinking of grinding these off and re-filling the resulting holes with JB Weld or similar. Once I get it right, then I'm intending to use Confor foam shaped similarly to a profile that works with the standard foam. Confor shapes to your bum, but retains its resilience. I used this to re-pad an SV650 seat, and it worked a treat.

What do others think?

A caveat on a Corbin seat, you'll love it or hate it. They are very firm, that's not a bad thing, I could ride all day and not have the backside discomfort that the stock seat gave me at ~250 miles. They are at least an inch lower than stock. That's where the problem is. The seat to peg distance is short if you have a long inseam or shot knees from too much motorcycle riding . I had to sell mine from the shot knee syndrome, which got worse with age :-[  What worked for me was the addition of an Alaskan Leather sheepskin pad to the stock seat. I can now ride all day on it. It seems that ventilation (or lack of!) was the problem causing discomfort with the stocker.

The Corbins do hold their value.

Whilst I have no experience of the item you are thinking of, I would have a read of the info at the link I posted to the Sargent seat site before shelling out $80 for a new cover that might look good and give a small amount of additional padding, but do little to actually make the seat more comfortable for the long haul. My 2c worth!

Interesting! Looks like a fair price. I wonder just how similar the GS550 seat is to the VX seat.

Unfortunately, what a seat looks like doesn't tell the whole story. Smart fabrics, piping and humps are nothing like so important as width, depth of foam, gel pads, etc.

I'd say in almost all cases, it's better to go to a custom seat guy and say exactly what you want. The one exception I know of relates to Ducati's comfort seat for my ST4, and that has been superb out of the box. Then again, the fact that it is wide, dished and gelled tells most of the story. That Euro-replacement VX/GS seat looks smart but narrow, convex and with a hump that will limit movement when you feel like a change of position.

Just sayin'....

If you are in a hot climate then don't go putting gelled inserts in, they get hot and hold the heat for quite a while = hot rear end.

Find a local auto upholster if you can. They can add, subtract and sculpt any shape you want for your seat and will cover it once they are done.

Or you can do it yourself with some white etho foam, some spray adhesive and a bread knife, or as TR suggests an electric carving knife. If you have an ample rear end like me DIY is the way to go. I have a friend who makes her own dresses who did the cover. An electric stapler is a must.
